NRA Pistol Permit

Notary Public Service
Appointed by the Secretary of the State.  Complies with Connecticut state law while remembering that a notary public does not have training or authority to prepare legal documents or make recommendations in legal transactions, nor trained or authorized to assist persons in the execution of wills.
Notary Service for most documents except for wills, power of attorney.

Identification
Connecticut law requires that the signer provide at least 2 forms of identification (unless notary personally knows the signer) at least 1 ID shall contain a photo of signer or physical description.  Acceptable forms of ID: valid drivers license, credit card that has been signed.  Social security card or birth certificate may not be used as ID.

​NRA Pistol Permit
You must take a Basic Pistol course with a NRA Certified Instructor before you can get a pistol permit in the state of Connecticut.  
Basic Pistol Course Description
The Basic Pistol course is just about eight hours. In it students will get the NRA's The Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook and intensive lessons in safety, gun handling, the various types of pistols, the fundamentals of pistol marksmanship, various pistol firing positions, several practical exercises on the firing range, cleaning, storage, and a summary of pistol sports and activities.  This course meets and exceeds the requirements set by the State of Connecticut to qualify to possess a permit to carry a handgun.

“To teach the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and using a pistol safely.”

  • Pistol Knowledge and Safe Gun Handling
  • Ammunition Knowledge and Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting
  • Firing the First Shots (includes cleaning and storage)
  • Two-handed and One-handed Standing Shooting Positions
  • Pistol Sports and Activities

Prerequisites
The are no prerequisites for taking this course, and the material is accessible to appropriately supervised mature children.

Course Completion
Students will receive feedback on the live-fire exercise and a course certificate upon successful completion of the lessons. Students will receive a “Basic Practical” rocker upon successful demonstration of firing a qualifying “group”. There is a short written test on the lesson material at the end of the course.

Process to Apply
  • Completed NRA Basic Pistol course
  • Present your course certificate to the police department, troopers, or town hall (depending on where you live) and request a pistol permit application.
  • Review and fulfill requirements of application (and check with your local town for additional requirements)
  • Submit your paperwork- your information will go to local, state, and federal agencies for background checks.  It should take 8 -14 weeks for your application to be returned to the local authority.  Be patient it can take longer.
  • After the temporary state permit has come in, take it to the Department of Public Safety.

Items to bring to Department of Public Safety
  • Valid 60 day temporary permit
  • Personal check or money order payable to DPS (no cash)
  • Drivers license or Connecticut ID card
  • Birth Certificate or proof or Citizenship.
